No More Movies on Domestic Flights? | By Stephanie Lambert
In an effort to save money in the face of increased fuel costs, U.S. Airways announced it will remove in-flight entertainment systems on all domestic flights beginning this November.
The movie systems in total add 500 pounds to each plane, which lessens fuel efficiency, explained spokesman Phil Gee. The airline expects to save around $10 million annually as a result of stripping the systems.
In total, around 200 aircraft flying domestic routes will be affected by this move, while planes used to fly international routes and to Hawaii will not be changed. Gee noted that the airline will be testing a lighter, seat-back entertainment system later this year, though its implentation is not scheduled in the near future.
